Position: Ontological Semantics Specialist, Lexical acquirer

Employer: RiverGlass, Inc.

I currently work as a Linguistics Consultant in the Ontological Semantics team of Computational Linguists, Knowlege Engineers and Computer Scientists directed by Dr. Christian Friedrich ("Kiki") Hempelmann and supervised by Professor Victor Raskin at the softrare-developing company RiverGlass, Inc. The OnSe team is developing and implementing a meaning-based module of intelligent information extraction and processing.

My responsibilities include:

  • Lexicon management, which includes mainly acquisition, i.e. constructing new entries with specified syntactic and semantic information for processing natural language data. Corpus-driven lexical acquisition implies running the input through Semantic Text Analyzer and augmenting the existing legacy lexicon with entries required for adequate processing. Corpus-driven lexical acquisition implies constructing closed-class entries and so far has been focused on prepositions, verbs with subject-instrument alternation (as per Beth Levin's taxonomy), verbs with parametric (mostly aspectual) meaning, adjectives, and pronouns. The work is currently ongoing.
  • Based on processing results, performing blame-assignment of functioning parsing modules of the Semantic Text Analyzer and static resources (Ontology, lexicon, Onomasticon), identify errors and report them to the appropriate team subgroups.
  • Lexicon documentation: describing and categogizing the legacy lexicon based on semantic, syntactic classes, lexical domains, concept branches, etc. with subsequent reporting to the team.
